Workshop Title: Care of students with diabetes: In-depth review and latest technology updates

Overall Objective

By the end of this workshop the nurse will be able to: 

  • Describe diabetes management steps and develop skills for optimal diabetes care at schools.   
  • Acquire an in-depth understanding of the latest technologies in glucose monitoring.
  • Explain key components of automated insulin delivery systems and acquire the skills needed to assist students using insulin pumps in performing required tasks.
  • Master the delivery of diabetes care to anticipate and prevent acute diabetes complications.

8:00 – 8:30 At the end of the session the nurse will be able to:

  • Describe and compare the pathophysiology of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children and youth.
  • Outline the management plan of type 1 & type 2 diabetes specific to children and teenagers.
  • Recognize the importance of diabetes control for the health and safety of children with diabetes.
  • Describe health conditions associated with type 1 & type 2 diabetes.
Review of Insulins in T1DM

Practical- Insulin injection technique

  • Identify the different types of insulin prescribed in T1DM and demonstrate an understanding of their characteristics.

  • Derive carbohydrate content using food labels.
  • Calculate insulin doses for meals and snacks according to carb content.

  • Deliver a glucagon injection.
  • Prepare an individualized plan for students with diabetes to manage and prevent hypoglycemia.
