People with diabetes should frequently do a blood sugar test, especially on the first week to make sure that their blood sugar level is in the desired range. Remember the blood sugar test does not invalidate your fasting.

If you had any hypoglycemia symptom, or if your blood sugar test result was less that 70 mg/dl, break your fast immediately even if it was minutes before Iftar time.
To avoid dehydration and protect their kidneys, people with diabetes should drink lots of water starting from Iftar time until Suhoor.
The following food items cause an immediate increase in blood sugar level: Juices, dates, pastries and desserts.
A patient with diabetes always needs family support, during Ramadan that can be done by having the whole family to follow a healthy life style.
Carbohydrates affect blood sugar levels directly, so try to be moderate and balance your meal to avoid blood sugar increase. Carbs sources are: rice, pasta, bread and pastries, potato, legumes, and fruits.
Having lots of carbs and sweets will cause a blood sugar increase; try to keep you meals balanced.
Food with excessive amount of fat, such as fried food and desserts, cause a delayed blood sugar increase, which last for a long time.
Try to make your meals healthy; try grilled food instead of the fried.
Avoid salty food such as nuts and pickles.
People with diabetes who use insulin injection should not fast (especially children and pregnant women), because going through a hypoglycemia might be very dangerous as it might lead to Ketoacidosis (coma) and other serious health problems. (check with your doctor)
People with diabetes who use medicines and the medical diet therapy as treatment, and whose blood sugar level is stable and don’t have kidney or liver problems are allowed to fast after checking with their doctor before Ramadan to adjust their medication.
To avoid dehydration, decrease the intake amount of caffeine that exists in the coffee, tea, and soft drinks.
To avoid having low blood sugar during your fasting day, your Suhoor meal must include food items that are rich with fibers, such as: oats, beans, lentils, chickpeas, and fruits.
Vegetables are healthy and low in calories, so it doesn’t lead to increase your blood glucose. Try to include it in every meal or snack.
Keep your meals balanced with types and quantities to avoid weight increase during Ramadan.
Diabetes patients should always test their blood sugar before driving, especially while fasting, and that is to make sure they don’t have a low blood sugar.
Before Ramadan, check with your doctor / health educator whether you are allowed to fast or not, and how to adjust your medication in case you were allowed to fast.
Reduce your physical activity during fasting hours, especially before Iftar time, and avoid sleeping for a long time while fasting, especially in the afternoon period and before Iftar time.
Remember to delay the Suhoor meal as much as possible, to avoid having a low blood sugar during fasting hours.
Always carry glucose tablets, or a bottle of juice, or a candy, to take it in case you had a low blood sugar while praying Tarawih at the mosque.
Monitoring you blood glucose level is very important at all times during Ramadan, so make sure you keep your blood sugar testing machine close to you.
Adults’ blood sugar level should be between 100 – 200 mg/dl during fasting.
