17th Al-Bawasil International Camp for children with diabetes to lunch Jan 28

The 17th Al-Bawasil annual camp for children with diabetes will be held from January 28 to February 1. The camp for children between 7 and 11 will be held at Aspire Academy.

Organized by Qatar Diabetes Association, an initiative of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, the annual camp, held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohamed bin Hamad bin Khalifah al-Thani, is one of the activities to help children with diabetes and offer special services for them through different activities.

A group of doctors, nurses, nutritionists and other specialists will ensure that the best services are offered to the participants.

The organizers said the purpose of the camp is to create a safe and loving environment for children with diabetes, address the emotional and physical pain caused by diabetes, and give them the confidence to reach their full potential.

The camp has several activities suitable to these children’s needs, such as simple educational workshops to deal with diabetes, how to inject insulin, nutritional aspects, impact of exercise, blood sugar testing among others. The camp also will provide opportunities for physical and artistic activities through field trips.

The camp will have several initiatives that will lead to exchange of experience and in integrating the children with the society. There are separate programmes to assist children in handling their feelings towards their condition and to make them depend on themselves and adapt ways of personal independence.

The camp will also teach the children to inject insulin by themselves as well as to adopt nutritional programmes. There will be programmes to help the children control their blood sugar level which can be practiced after the camp as well as how to observe and treat low and high blood sugar.

The camp will be managed by a team consisting of a camp manager, camp coordinator and a medical committee with 24-hour healthcare team including a number of physicians, nurses and professional counselors. There is also a nutrition committee that will provide the participants with healthy meals during the entire camp and teach the children how to count the carbohydrates in their food.
